Amber is an organic substance, being a fossilized resin of coniferous trees. The largest deposits of amber are located in Kaliningrad, but it is also found in the Polish part of the Baltic Sea and it’s a characteristic ore for Poland. The color of amber is difficult to define clearly, it can take such shades as light yellow, sunny and brown or cognac. Amber is sometimes transparent or matte. It comes in a uniform color or with inclusions of streaks and particles sunk into its mass. Amber comes from the German word "bernstein", which is a stone that burns, but has been known under different names for centuries. The Greeks called this stone "electron" which means shiny. Romans called amber "lyncurium" means lynx urine. According to a legend the golden stone was made from the fossilised urine of this predator. The Latin nave "succinum" comes from the word "succus" - juice. The Persians called the stone "karuba" - a golden robber. The Slavic name "jantar", on the other hand, was taken over from the Lithuanians, and this one from the Phoenician name "jainitar" - sea resin.
